أَعطَيتَنيyou gave me ياO وَلِيَّguardian of الحَقِّtruth مُبتَدِئاًtaking the initiative
أَعطَيتَني يا وَلِيَّ الحَقِّ مُبتَدِئاً
عَطِيَّةًa gift كافَأَتrewarded مَدحيmy praise وَلَمand did not تَرَنيsee me
عَطِيَّةً كافَأَت مَدحي وَلَم تَرَني
You gave me, O guardian of truth, unbidden,
O just guardian, from the start you gave me
a gift that rewarded my praise, though you had not seen me.
A gift rewarding my praise, though you saw me not.
ماnot شِمتُI watched بَرقَكَyour lightning حَتّىuntil نِلتُI received رَيِّقَهُits first rain
ما شِمتُ بَرقَكَ حَتّى نِلتُ رَيِّقَهُ
كَأَنَّماas though كُنتَyou were بِالجَدوىwith bounty تُبادِرُنيyou were racing ahead of me
كَأَنَّما كُنتَ بِالجَدوى تُبادِرُني
No sooner had I watched your lightning than I received its first rain,
I had not yet glimpsed your lightning before I drank its nectar,
as though you were racing ahead of me with your bounty.
As though you hastened to benefit me.
