ياO بائِعَseller الزَيتِthe oil عَرِّجturn aside غَيرَnot مَرموقِheld in regard
يا بائِعَ الزَيتِ عَرِّج غَيرَ مَرموقِ
لِتُشغَلَنَّyou shall surely be distracted عِنِfrom الأَرطالِthe pound-weights وَالسوقِand the market
لِتُشغَلَنَّ عِنِ الأَرطالِ وَالسوقِ
O seller of oil, turn aside, held in no regard;
O you who sell oil, walk away from the disreputable
You shall surely be distracted from the pound-weights and the market.
That you may forget about weights and the market
مَنwhoever رامَsought شَتمَكَreviling you لَمdid not يَنزِعresort إِلىto كَذِبِfalsehood
مَن رامَ شَتمَكَ لَم يَنزِع إِلى كَذِبِ
فيconcerning مُنتَماكَyour lineage وَأَبداهُand revealed it بِتَحقيقِwith certainty
في مُنتَماكَ وَأَبداهُ بِتَحقيقِ
Whoever sought to revile you did not resort to lies
Whoever intends to insult you is not inclined to lying
about your lineage, and made it known as fact.
In the manner of your upbringing which he presents truthfully
أَبوكَyour father عَبدٌa slave وَلِلأُمِّand the mother has التّيwho فَلَقَتsplit open
أَبوكَ عَبدٌ وَلِلأُمِّ التّي فَلَقَت
عَنaway from أُمِّthe crown of رَأسِكَyour head هَنٌّa vulva غَيرُnot مَحلوقِshaven
عَن أُمِّ رَأسِكَ هَنٌّ غَيرُ مَحلوقِ
Your father is a slave; and the mother who split open
Your father is a servant and to the mother who bore you
to let out the crown of your head has an unshaven vulva.
Apart from the mother of your head a praise undeserved
إِنif أَنتَyou عَدَّدتَyou named أَصلاًan ancestor لاnot تُسَبُّyou are reviled بِهِon his account
إِن أَنتَ عَدَّدتَ أَصلاً لا تُسَبُّ بِهِ
يَوماًone day فَأُمُّكَthen your mother مِنّيfrom me ذاتُsubject to تَطليقِdivorce
يَوماً فَأُمُّكَ مِنّي ذاتُ تَطليقِ
If you name an ancestor for whom you are not reviled
If you were to count a lineage that does not get insulted
on any day, then your mother is divorced from me.
Then your mother to me is one who is divorced
وَلَنand will not تُطيقَyou can manage بِحَولٍwith strength أنto تُزيلَyou remove شَجاًa bone lodged in the throat
وَلَن تُطيقَ بِحَولٍ أن تُزيلَ شَجاً
أَثبَتُّهُI lodged it firmly مِنكَof you فيin مُستَنزَلِthe downward passage of الريقِsaliva
أَثبَتُّهُ مِنكَ في مُستَنزَلِ الريقِ
Nor will you be able, by any strength, to dislodge a choking bone
And you will not be able with some might to remove a wound
that I have lodged in you, where saliva descends.
I have affirmed in you in the abode of spittle
اللَهُGod أَنَشاكَcreated you مِنfrom نَوكٍfolly وَمِنand from كَذِبٍfalsehood
اللَهُ أَنَشاكَ مِن نَوكٍ وَمِن كَذِبٍ
لاdo not تُعطَفَنَّever be linked إِلىto لُؤمٍbaseness لِمَخلوقِof any creature
لا تُعطَفَنَّ إِلى لُؤمٍ لِمَخلوقِ
God created you from folly and from falsehood.
God created you from malignance and from lies
Never be linked to the baseness of any creature.
Do not be amenable to the vices of a creature
ماذاwhat يَقولُsays اِمرُؤٌa man غَشّاكَcloaked you مِدحَتَهُhis praise
ماذا يَقولُ اِمرُؤٌ غَشّاكَ مِدحَتَهُ
إِلّاexcept اِبنُson زانِيَةٍan adulteress أَوor فَرخُa chick زِنديقِa heretic
إِلّا اِبنُ زانِيَةٍ أَو فَرخُ زِنديقِ
What can a man who has cloaked you in his praise say
What can a man say who flatters you in his praise
except "son of an adulteress" or "a heretic's chick"?
Except the son of an adulteress or the chick of a heretic
