    What have I to do with you? You have burdened me beyond reason:

    bearing arms, and the armored warriors’ cry of ‘Halt!’

    Did you take me for one of death’s men,

    spending evening and morning longing for destruction?

    فَكَيفَ أَمشي إِلَيها بارِزَ الكَتِفِ

    I see death befall others, and I loathe it;

    so how could I walk toward it, bare-shouldered?

    God has bestowed most of His bounty

    through your hands—so thanks, O Abu Dulaf!

    حَتّى إِذا وَقَفَت أَعطى وَلَم يَقِفِ

    Abu Dulaf gave while the wind was raging;

    even when it stopped, he gave and did not stop.

    His two scribes did not write ‘No’ in his record

    on any day, as ‘No’ is written in all other records.
