وَأَبيَضَand a fair, noble man عِجلِيٍّof the tribe of ʿIjl رَأَيتُI saw غَمامَهُhis rain-cloud
وَأَسيافَهُand his swords تَقضيput an end عَلىto الحَدثانِthe blows of fate
And a fair nobleman of ʿIjl—I saw his rain-cloud,
I saw the cloud of a swift white stallion
and his swords putting an end to the blows of fate.
And its swords slaying the young camels
بِهِthrough him عَلِمَlearned الإِعطاءُgiving كُلُّevery مُبَخَّلٍman deemed miserly
وَأَقدَمَand advanced boldly يَومَon the day of الرَوعِterror كُلُّevery جَبانِcoward
Through him, every man deemed miserly learned to give,
Through it, every miserly one learned generosity
and on the day of terror every coward advanced boldly.
And every coward advanced on the terrible day
وَكَمand how many لَكَof yours مِنof يَومٍa day رَفَعتَyou raised بِناءَهُits edifice
بِذاتِwith that which has جُفونscabbards أَوor بِذاتِwith that which has جِفانِlarge serving bowls
And how many a day of yours had its edifice raised by you,
And how many a structure you raised by your eyelids
with sheathed swords or with feasts served in bowls!
Or by your brows on a fateful day
مَدَدتُI extended إِلَيهِto him ذِمَّتيmy claim to protection فَأَجارَهاso he safeguarded it
وَأَغنىand made independent يَديmy hand عَنof غَيرِهِanyone other than him وَلِسانيand my tongue
I held out to him my claim to protection, and he safeguarded it;
I extended my protection to him, and he granted it sanctuary
and he made my hand and tongue independent of anyone else.
And enriched my hand and tongue apart from others
شَرِبتُI drank وَرَوَّيتُand I gave drink to satiety النَديمthe drinking companion بِمالِهِwith his wealth
وَأَدرَكتُand I exacted ثَأرَvengeance for الراحِwine مِنfrom رَمضانِRamadan
I drank and gave the drinking companion his fill with his wealth,
I quenched and watered the companion with his money
and I exacted wine's revenge upon Ramadan.
And got revenge on the hot month of Ramadan
وَكانَand there was لِشَوّالٍfor Shawwal عَلَيَّbinding upon me ضَمانَةٌa pledge
فَكانَتso were عَطاياthe gifts of جودِهِhis generosity بِضمانِas surety
And I owed Shawwal a pledge,
Shawwal had a claim over me
so the gifts of his generosity served as surety.
So his gifts of generosity came with a guarantee
