You left me wasted by sorrows I struggle with,
At the valley bend I lament amid the wasted remnants of ruins.

Were it not for Abu Dulaf, no kindness would live,
Nor would a hoped-for patron's rain-star rise laden with hopes.

O son of Adnan's noblest men, as they well know,
And heir to ancient glory through paternal and maternal uncles.
أَنتَyou الَّذيthe one who تُنزِلُyou set الأَيّامَthe days مَنزِلَهاtheir place
وَتَنقُلُand you turn الدَهرَtime مِنfrom حالٍa state إِلىto حالِa state
You are the one who sets the days in their place,
And turns time from one state to another.
وَماand never مَدَدتَyou extended مَدىthe reach of طَرفٍa glance إِلىtoward أَحَدٍanyone
إِلّاexcept قَضَيتَyou decreed بِأَرزاقٍconcerning livelihoods وَآجالِand lifespans
And never have you cast your gaze toward anyone
Without decreeing livelihoods and lifespans.
تَزورُyou visit سُخطاًin wrath فَتُمسىso become by evening البيضُthe white swords راضِيَةًsatisfied
وَتَستَهِلُّand you beam فَتَبكيso weep أَعيُنُthe eyes of المالِwealth
You visit in wrath, and by evening the white swords are satisfied,
And you beam, so the eyes of wealth weep.
كَأَنَّas though خيِلَكَyour horses فيin أَثناءِthe midst of غَمرَتِهاtheir tumult
أَرسالُsuccessive showers قَطرٍrain تَهامىpouring down فَوقَover أَرسالِsuccessive showers
It is as though your horses, amid their tumult,
Were showers of rain cascading over showers.
يَخرُجنَthey emerge مِنfrom غَمَراتِthe engulfing depths of المَوتِdeath سامِيَةًrising high

They emerge from death's engulfing depths, rising high,
Like fingertips spread by a chilled man warming himself at the fire.
