May God make the onset of fasting a triumph

for Humayd, and a joy in continued life.

For it is a springtime month for Qur’an reciters,

and one of parting from the drinking companion and tawny wine.

And I, a solvent guarantor, promise whoever drinks

it after breaking his fast a long stretch of darkness.

And it is as though I see the drinking companions in abasement,

    awaiting their dawn at evening.

    Some have ceased visiting others,

and have taken copies of the Qur’an in place of song.

Through Humayd—and where is Humayd’s equal?—

Tayy has boasted over the other tribes.

His bounty has made generosity manifest on earth,

and enriched the penniless despite their poverty.

A king whose bounty people hope for,

just as they hope for rain from heaven.

God fashioned him to feed people on earth,

and fashioned the clouds to provide water.
