ثَوَيْنَا بِالْقَطَاقِطِ مَا ثَوَيْنَا

ثَوَيْنَا بِالْقَطَاقِطِ مَا ثَوَيْنَا

وَبالْعَبْرَيْنِ حولا ما نَرِيمُ

وَبالْعَبْرَيْنِ حولا ما نَرِيمُ

We stayed at al-Qaṭāqiṭ as long as we stayed,

We have endured many calamities

And at al-ʿAbrayn for a year, without departing.

And turned around much misfortune

وأُخبر أهلنا أَن قد هلكنا

وأُخبر أهلنا أَن قد هلكنا

وقد أعيا الكواهن والبسومُ

وقد أعيا الكواهن والبسومُ

And our people were told that we had already perished,

Inform our people we have perished

And the seeresses and the ever-smiling one had grown weary.

The fortune-tellers and diviners are exhausted

وآسانا على ما كان أوس

وآسانا على ما كان أوس

وبعض القوم ملحيٌّ ذميمُ

وبعض القوم ملحيٌّ ذميمُ

And Aws supported us through what had happened,

It was easy for us what was most difficult

And some of the people are censured and blameworthy.

And some of the people are mean and despicable

فقلت لهم أيا قومي أبانت

فقلت لهم أيا قومي أبانت

فكونوا النَّاهضين بها وقوموا

فكونوا النَّاهضين بها وقوموا

So I said to them, "O my people, it has become clear;

So I said to them, O my people it is clear

So be the ones to take it up, and rise up,

Be those who set out with it and stand

بوفدٍ من سراة بني تميم

بوفدٍ من سراة بني تميم

إلى أمثالهم لجأَ اليتيمُ

إلى أمثالهم لجأَ اليتيمُ

With a delegation of the chiefs of Banu Tamim.

With a delegation from the chiefs of Banu Tamim

To men like them the orphan sought refuge.

To their likes the orphan takes refuge

فإنَّكم لأَن تكفوه أهل

فإنَّكم لأَن تكفوه أهل

عليكم حق قومكم عظيم

عليكم حق قومكم عظيم

For you are indeed worthy to provide for him;

For you to ward it off is an obligation

Your people's claim upon you is great.

Upon you is a great duty to your people

وإنَّكمُ بِعقوة ذي بلاءِ

وإنَّكمُ بِعقوة ذي بلاءِ

وحقُّ الملك مكشوف عظيمُ

وحقُّ الملك مكشوف عظيمُ

And you are in the precincts of one marked by trial,

And you are in the grip of one with calamity

And the king's claim is manifest and great."

And the right of the king is great and exposed
