هل تبلغنَّا ما أقول النعمان

هل تبلغنَّا ما أقول النعمان

O Hamal, son of Malik, son of Ahban,

Will you convey for us what I say to al-Nu'man?

إنَّ الطَّعام كان عيش الإنسان

إنَّ الطَّعام كان عيش الإنسان

أهلكتني بالحبس بعد الحرمان

أهلكتني بالحبس بعد الحرمان

Indeed, food was humankind's sustenance.

You have destroyed me by imprisonment after deprivation,

من بين عارٍ جائع وعطشان

من بين عارٍ جائع وعطشان

وذاك من شرِّ حباء الضِّيفان

وذاك من شرِّ حباء الضِّيفان

Amid the naked, the hungry, and the thirsty.

And that is among the worst gifts offered to guests.
