ياO أختُsister ماتhas died الفجرthe dawn منfrom عالَمٍa world
أهيمI wander aimlessly فيin أركانهits corners الباليهْworn-out
O sister, dawn is dead and gone from a world
through whose worn-out corners I wander.
وكلماand whenever ودعتI bade farewell to يوماa day مضىthat passed
فزعتI grew afraid منof أياميmy days الباقيهremaining
And whenever I bid farewell to a day gone by,
I grow afraid of my remaining days.
كأنماas though عمريmy life وأوهامهand its illusions
قهقهةa peal of laughter فيin غرفةa room خاليهempty
As though my life and its illusions
were a peal of laughter in an empty room.
ومنand from حواليّaround me عويلthe wailing of الورىhumankind
يضيعis lost فيin أرجاءthe reaches of حلمa dream مخيفْfrightening
And humankind's wailing from all around me
is lost in the reaches of a frightening dream.
أَكُلّis all...? ماthat which فيin الكونthe universe إغفاءةa brief slumber
وأمنياتand wishes وحديثand talk سخيفfoolish
Is everything in the universe a brief slumber,
and wishes and foolish talk,
وأوجهand faces تنضبrun dry منهاfrom them المنىhopes
وأرجلand legs تركضrun خلفafter الرغيفthe loaf of bread
and faces from which hopes drain away,
and legs running after a loaf of bread?
أسألI ask نفسيmy soul حينwhen أمضيI go on بهاwith it:
أسأل نفسي حين أمضي بها:
أماis there not لهذاfor this الجهدtoil منany مقصدِpurpose
I ask my soul as I journey with it:
Has this toil no purpose?
وأنصتand I listen intently المسمعthe ear فيin وحدتيmy solitude
إلىto لهاثthe panting of العالمthe world المجهدexhausted
And in my solitude I lend an ear
to the panting of the exhausted world,
كأنماas though يهمسit whispers فيin سيرهits journey:
كأنما يهمس في سيره:
إنيindeed I معwith الموتdeath علىat موعدan appointment
as though it whispers on its way:
"Indeed, I have an appointment with death."
