My life lies in my greetings to a light
With the water of its life it quenched me in the morning
that gave me the water of its life to drink at dawn.

I have silenced every wicked doctor
لَقَدindeed اِرغُمتyou humbled كلevery طبيبphysician of سوءevil
أَضاعsquandered بهزَلِهِthrough his frivolity طولthe length of الزَمانِtime
You have indeed humbled every vile physician
Who wasted his nonsense all this time
who squandered all that time in frivolity.
And they said he died, say they died of rage

And they said, "He died." Say, "Die of rage!"
For the intended came alive, he came to me
For my greatest desire has indeed come to me alive,
And renewed with the reunion the life of my soul

I invoke protection for him بِآياتwith verses لِثانيmy tongue (uncertain reading)
and renewed my spirit's life through reunion.
I seek refuge for it in the verses of the Protector
I invoke protection for him with verses upon my tongue.
So leave me, my friend, and friends leave

So leave me, my friend, with the beloved, and withdraw;
And we will line with kohl the eyelid of wishes
and let us line the eyelid of hope with praise.

And I have prepared what is in the palm

And I have prepared everything in my palm
For the one who gifted me a shirt of innocence
for him who graced me with the shirt of my healing.
My beloved, with what He gave you light
حَبيبيmy beloved بِالَّذيby the One who اِعطاكَgave you نوراa light
تَقودُyou guide بِهِwith it كَماas تَرضىyou please عَنائيmy suffering
My beloved, by the One who gave you a light,
With which you guide as you wish my effort
with which you guide my suffering as you please,
And that light is from the niche of grace
وَذاكَand that النورُlight مِنfrom مشكاةa lamp-niche of فَضلgrace

and that light comes from a niche of grace:
With it, He guided me to the path of my goal
with it He guided me to the path of my desire.
If it probed my heart with fire

May my heart, if it forgets you, burn in a fire
With which it burns my thorns
that sears my innermost parts, my fingertips.
And were it not for patience, I would have given my soul
وَلَولاand were it not for الصَبرpatience جِدتI gave generously بِبَذلby offering روحيmy soul
لِمَنto whoever حَياlived بِقُربِكَthrough your closeness وَالتَدانيand drawing near
But for patience, I would freely offer my soul
For one who lived in your nearness and intimacy
to whoever lives through your closeness and intimacy.
And I did not begrudge it life out of love
وَلَمand I did not أَبخَلwithhold بِهاit حباout of love لِعَيشfor life
وَعَيشand the life of المَرءِa person مَهماhowever طالَit lasts فانيis fleeting
Nor have I withheld it out of love for life,
And the life of man, however long, is fleeting
and a person's life, however long, is fleeting.
Months have passed in affliction
وَقَدand indeed مَرَّتpassed عَلىover المَضنىthe sufferer شُهورmonths
يُعانيhe suffers مِنfrom فُراقِكَseparation from you ماwhat يُعانيhe suffers
And months have passed over the sufferer,
Suffering from your separation what it suffers
suffering what he suffers from separation from you.
But I wanted to live so that
وَلكِنّيbut I وددتdesired العَيشlife كيماso that
أَراكَI see you كَماas تَرىyou see غيريothers besides me تَرانيyou see me
But I longed for life so that
I can see you as you see others see me
I might see you, and you might see me as you see others.
So O you who tasted the shame of separation
فَياso O مَنyou who قَدindeed بلوتyou have experienced بعارwith the disgrace of خلa friend
وَياand O مَنyou who قَدindeed شَقىsuffered شَوقاfrom longing سَلانيask me, both of you
O you who have experienced a friend's disgrace,
And O you who suffered longing, my misery
and O you who have suffered from longing, ask me, both of you:
Do you think love can be abandoned?
أَبعذdoes it revive? (unclear reading) الحبlove تَرىdo you think أَمor يُواريburies
فَقولso speaking الصِدقthe truth يَهديكُمguides you بَيانيmy explanation
Does love [revive?], do you think, or bury?
So speak the truth, my eloquence will guide you
My explanation will guide you by speaking the truth:
I die and my eyelid will see you, my beloved
أَموتُI die وَمُقلَتيwhile my eye تَرآىbeholds عَزيزيmy beloved
وَيَغفِرُand forgives زِلَّتيmy error مَنwhoever قَدmay يَرانيsees me
I shall die while my eye beholds my beloved,
And He forgives my slip, whoever sees me
and may whoever sees me forgive my error.
I extended in supplication the palms of my praise
بَسطتI stretched out بِالاِبتِهالin supplication أَكفthe palms of حَمديmy praise
لِمَنto the One who بِاللُطفِwith kindness عَنfrom كَفa hand وِقائيmy protection
I stretched out the palms of my praise in supplication
For the One who graciously provides my grasp
to the One whose kindness protected me from a hand;
When the doctor despaired and abandoned me
اِذاwhen يَئِسَdespaired الطَبيبُthe physician وَكلand grew weary عَنّيof me
بِقُدرَتِهِthrough His power بِماwith what أَرجوI hope for حَبانيgranted me
when the physician despaired and grew weary of me,
With His power, He blessed me with what I hope for
through His power He granted me what I hope for.
And I cannot fully express my gratitude
وَلَستُand I am not بِبالِغattaining مِقدارthe measure of شُكريmy thanks
لَوانeven if جَوارِحيmy limbs سَبَقتُI outstripped (probably: they outstripped) لِسانيmy tongue
Yet I cannot fulfill the measure of my thanks,
If my limbs spoke, they would precede my tongue
even if my limbs outstripped my tongue.
I will plead misery for every friend
سَأَضرَعُI shall humbly plead بِالشَقاءِin affliction لكلfor every خلfriend
لِمَنto the One who ماas long as دُمتُI remain عائِشَةliving; also Aisha شَفانيhealed me
I shall plead in affliction for every friend
For one who as long as I live, healed me
to Him who healed me, as long as I, Aisha, live.
