The ship of the eye has escaped drowning,

And shines resplendent from the shore of the pupils.

It passed, lofty-built, untouched by weariness,

Its appearance translucent, in the finest order.

And its light laughs, its back teeth showing,

When the dawn of clarity breathed forth from twilight.

It has embraced a cherished one with longing, invoking protection for him

From slanderers, by the Lord of light and daybreak.

So, O rulers of love, my passion lies in your truthfulness,

For I have not recovered from passion’s bewilderment.

By beauty’s Kaaba, I see a pupil; they examined

My eye, which so long went astray because of darkness.

And tell me: has my pupil grown clear and drawn near

To a lovesick one whom separation struck with sleeplessness?

Yes, our souls greet you with reunion’s glad tidings,

And union with the one you love has drawn near, so awaken!

Welcome to the light of eyes that delighted me and grew clear,

After my despair and long fear and dread.

So, O greetings of recovery, whose honey in my mouth

Sweetened the bitterness of my sleeplessness from anxiety.

With what words shall I greet him, when his dignity

Is hard to attain, beyond the reach of any contender?

But the inner feeling of congratulations is not hidden,

And the light of my joy appeared to people like daybreak.

And this young gazelle, since he arose in the beauty of his face,

Has had his dwellings in the tenderness of the pupils.

    لا أَوحش اللَهُ من اِحسانِكَ الغَدق

    Pupil of my eye, whom I would ransom, you have shone within it;

May God never leave me bereft of your abundant kindness.

I swore, when I was given poison to drink in my illness,

And its nights left me in need of every wretched soul,

To complain of my anguish only to the one who, for me,

Remained in the eyes through every injustice.

    بَرت يَميني وَكانَ الصدق من خلفي

    And you have been granted light borrowed from you;

My oath was fulfilled, and truth stood behind me.

The nights of my affliction grew weary of anguish and [unclear],

And loaded me with burdens upon my neck.

They led my rein to the cave of illness and leaned

Against its door for months that dragged on, so I could bear no more.

As though they were a rival wife hurt by my ease

In nearness to you, and so traveled the worst paths.

So did they intend to cleanse the grudges they concealed

Through trails of tears pouring from the corners of the eyes?

When I sought aid through God’s grace, He made available to me

Applications of patience’s kohl that freed me from anxiety.

And God restored you, light of the two eyes, to

A lovesick one who never trusted any guide but you.

How often my bones were crushed by illnesses that left me

Like antimony, ground to powder for the eyes of the wide-eyed.

How often I said in my ordeal: O Lord, take my hand,

And lift my sickness, and grant sleep to the sleepless.

So with the two little ones I offer thanks, in grateful acknowledgment,

To my Creator, as long as the two full moons shine clear on the horizon.
