Stop, you two, in the wastes through which his company passed—

A gazelle whose fragrance wafted with a breath of musk.

And turn aside to those gardens, that I might

Gain a fragrance from them, sweet to breathe.

    And tell the caravan's camel-driver, 'Slowly!'—for perhaps

A heart long burning there may find relief.

May God water those dwellings and their people

With pouring rain whose free flow never ceases.

There is a gazelle's covert: were you to see its gazelles,

You would return with longing whose bonds cannot be loosened,

And become like me, between rejection and estrangement.

My soul for youth, whose foliage has turned away from me!

I clung to the ties of passion, but never gained

A musk-like beauty spot that sweetened its anemone-red cheek.

I was struck by an arrow from eyelids, and a keen-edged blade

Whose gleam brings towering mountains down.

And how many lands I traversed, tracing a departing one's trail,

While the carnelian of my tears flows down the desert slopes!

And how many seas I crossed! The treasury of my thought

Has a depth exceeding that of the vast sea.
