بِبابِat the gate of رَجائِكَhope in You العَبدُthe servant الذَليلthe lowly one
My God, my Master, You are the Majestic.
My Lord, You are the Majestic One
At the gate of hope in You stands the lowly servant,
At Your door of hope, the humble servant

كَثيرُabundant in الغَيwaywardness ناصِرُهُhis helper قَليلscarce
Weak in plight, broken, poor,
Weak in state, downcast, destitute
Much given to waywardness, with little help.
Great in sin, with few helpers
فَاِنتَfor You لذنيهfor his sin (probable reading) ربa Lord غَفورforgiving
كَريمgenerous صَفحَةHis pardon (probable reading) الساميthe sublime جَزيلabundant
For You are a Lord forgiving his sin,
Yet You are to Your servants a Forgiving Lord
Generous, whose sublime pardon is abundant.
Noble, abounding in pardon and grace
قَصَدتI sought حَماكَYour sanctuary ياO مَولىMaster of المَوالىthe masters
أَرومُI seek العَفوَpardon أَملhope جَميلbeautiful
I have sought Your sanctuary, O Master of masters;
I have come seeking Your protection, O Master of masters
I seek pardon—a beautiful hope.
Hoping for pardon, a beautiful hope
قَصدتI sought حَماكَYour sanctuary تَستَرYou conceal قبجugliness (probable reading) عيبيmy fault
بِسرby the mystery of المُصطَفىal-Mustafa, the Chosen One اِنّيindeed I دَخيلa seeker of refuge
I have sought Your sanctuary, that You may veil the ugliness of my fault.
I have come seeking Your veil for my shameful sins
By the mystery of al-Mustafa, I am a seeker of refuge.
By the station of al-Mustafa, I am a newcomer
فَحاشاthen, far be it أَنthat تَخيبَYou disappoint فيكَin You ظَنّيmy expectation
وَأَنتَand You لِعَبدِكَfor Your servant الراجيwho hopes كَفيلa guarantor
Far be it, then, for You to disappoint my hope in You,
It would be shameful if my hopes in You were dashed
And You are the guarantor of Your hopeful servant.
For You are the Guarantor for Your beseeching servant
فَاِنfor if يَكُbe جُرمthe guilt of عَبدِكَYour servant لَيسَis not يُحصىcounted
فَحُسنُthen the beauty of رِضاكَYour favor لَيسَthere is no لَهُfor it عَديلequal
For if Your servant's guilt is beyond counting,
If Your servant's sins cannot be counted
Then the beauty of Your favor has no equal.
Then the beauty of Your good pleasure has no equal
فَمنthen who ليfor me اِنif طردتYou cast out وَأيand which بابِgate
أَيممI turn toward دونَother than بابِكَYour gate ياO جَليلMajestic One
Then who is there for me if You cast me out, and what gate
If You turn me away, to which door can I go?
Shall I turn toward besides Your gate, O Majestic One?
What door other than Yours is majestic?
لَقَدindeed قادَled الشَقاءَmisery زمامthe reins of حَتفىmy doom
لِواديto the valley of خِجلَتيmy shame بِئسَwretched is الدَليلthe guide
Misery has indeed led my doom by the reins
Misfortune has led the reins of my doom
To the valley of my shame—what a wretched guide!
To the valley of my disgrace—what an evil guide!
فَاِينَthen where أفرُّI flee منfrom شيطانthe devil of نَفسيmy soul
وَمنand from أَمارَتيmy evil-commanding self أَينَwhere السَبيلthe way out
Where, then, can I flee from the devil of my soul,
Where can I flee from the devil of my soul?
And from my self that urges evil—where is the way out?
From its incitements—where is the path?
عَظيمgreat in العَفوِpardon اِنif عَظُمتَhave grown great ذُنوبيmy sins
فَلىso I have أَملhope لِعَفوِكَfor Your pardon لاnot يَزولfades
O Great in pardon, even if my sins have grown great,
Great in pardon—if my sins are immense
I still have hope of Your pardon that never fades.
Then my hope in Your pardon does not cease
