مجابMujab (literally, 'answered') قَدhas indeed دَعاcalled وَالانسand fellowship عيدa festival
وَأَروىand quenched القَلبَthe heart بِالنيلwith the Nile الجَديدrenewed
Mujab has called, and fellowship is a festival;
The caller to prayer has called, and people celebrate Eid,
And quenched the heart with the renewed Nile.
My heart is sated with the new Nile,
وَقَدand indeed راقَتbecame delightful شُمولُwine اليَومَtoday حَتّىso that
شَممناwe smelled العودaloeswood فيin كفthe palm of الفَريدthe peerless one
And the wine was so delightful today that
The fragrance of this day intoxicates us,
We smelled aloeswood in the peerless one's palm.
We smell incense in the palm of the young man.
طَرِبناwe rejoiced بِالزُهورِin the flowers وَبِالنَدامىand in the drinking companions
وَجاوَزناand we surpassed السَعيدَthe fortunate one بِأَلفby a thousand عيدfestivals
We rejoiced in the flowers and the drinking companions,
We rejoice at the flowers and the dew,
And surpassed the fortunate one by a thousand festivals.
We surpass the happy one by a thousand Eids,
يُعادُit is repeated مَعwith المَسَرَّةgladness كُلevery حينoccasion
وَداعىand the caller to الاِنسfellowship فيin عَيشِa life رَغيدof ease
It is repeated with gladness at every turn,
Every time joy returns with celebration,
And the caller to fellowship lives in ease.
The caller to intimacy lives in blissful life.
وَاِنand if لامَblamed الخَلاةthose untouched by love اِذاwhen طَرِبناwe rejoiced
فَقُلthen say لَهُمto them غَلَطتمyou were mistaken فيin الشُهودwitnessing
And if those untouched by love blame us when we rejoice,
If the critics blame us when we rejoice,
Then tell them, 'You were mistaken in what you witnessed.'
Tell them: "You have erred in your witnessing."
وَغادَرَهُمand leave them بِغَفلَتِهِمin their heedlessness وَحيand come
لِمَجلِسِناto our gathering عَلىin رَغمdefiance of العَتيدthe ever-ready one
And leave them to their heedlessness, and come
And they left our gathering in their neglect,
To our gathering, in defiance of the ever-ready one.
Despite the enemies, to our defiance.
اِلىuntil مَwhat? يَلومَنيhe blames me فيهاover her رَقبيmy watcher
وَأَمسىand by evening he was قائِلاsaying هَمconcern (possibly a misprint for 'is there?') مِنany مَزيدmore
How long will my watcher blame me for her?
To those who blame me for it,
And by evening he was saying, '[Is there] more?'
I say: "This is but an increase in love."
يُكلِّفُنيdemands of me العَذولthe reproacher بِضدthe opposite of قَصديmy intent
وَماليand I have no عَنfrom هَواهاlove of her مِنany مُحيدescape
The reproacher demands of me the opposite of my intent,
They charge me with rejecting their desire,
And I have no escape from loving her.
While I cannot deviate from my passion.
وَلَيسَand there is no عَلَيهِupon him وَزرsin فيin وَلَوعىmy infatuation
وَماand not المَولىthe Lord بِظَلّامٍat all unjust لِلعَبيدto the servants
And he bears no sin for my infatuation,
He bears no guilt for my torment,
And the Lord is not unjust to His servants.
For the Lord is not unjust to His servants.
