I gave up love, not for lack of means,

    Nor because of a tale-bearer's or a watcher's reproach,

Nor from dread of the sighs of youthful dalliance,

Nor from fear of the beloved's eyelids,

Nor from dread of parting and fear of abandonment,

Which makes tears flow like a downpour.

But I chose chastity of soul,

Whose purity gladdens the discerning eye.

And that is because I live in an age of people

In which refinement seems a strange thing.
