How can my heart find rest, when his eyes
How can I find peace when his eyes
tell of the gleaming blades of keen-edged swords?
Are narrators of the white page's beauty?

Alas for this heart, in which there took hold
Alas, what a passion has settled in me,
a fire—and the reproaching women knew not what it was:
A fire - though the maidens know not what it may be.

لا غرو اِن يُدعي بِنار حامِيَه
a longing formed from a consuming blaze—
A longing that burns and destroys,
no wonder if it is called a scorching fire.
No wonder it's called a blazing fire.

The glances decreed rejection, and did not see;
Glances have judged, yet never seen -
oh, would that they had decreed union!
If only they were a judge decreeing union!
