I have come to Your lofty door in my abasement.

If You do not pardon my lapses, who is there for me?

Confessing my wrongdoing and my obedience

to my soul's command in all I bind and loose,

and acknowledging heavy burdens of sin,

which, in my ignorance, I am willingly led to bear.

I confess my lapse beforehand, lest

my limbs confess the sin before I do.

I have come with sins beyond all counting,

saying to Him who shows me mercy: "Be there for me with pardon."

now that the departing litters have risen to carry me.

How often delusion circled with the wine of conceit

around me, while I never recovered from the terror of my madness!

And in my heedlessness I became absorbed in others' faults,

yet what am I but a gathering-place for faults, through and through?

    وَهَل يَبدو الرَشادُ لِعَين مِثلي

    I strayed from the path and never entered it;

could right guidance appear to the eye of one like me?

My soul strove to have me walk headlong,

upon my face, obeying it—woe to me!

My counselor guided me, yet I grew more foolish,

and I said to my guide in rebuke, "Go away!"

I see you in my locks, O gray hair; admonish me,

and say, "Departure is due tomorrow"—perhaps I...

For the first thing you see is a fearsome grave [reading uncertain],

its earth heaped up by the hand of brother and friend.

They have gone back as though they had never known me,

though they are my kin [reading uncertain], my sons, and my family.

My sons busy themselves dividing wealth,

while I am deeply preoccupied with being questioned about it.

    لَه رحماكَ من بَعدي وَقَبلي

    You, then, are there for me in my solitude [text uncertain], and for every sinner;

may Your mercy be his, after me and before me.
