Where is the road to the gates of spiritual openings?

Where is the way to attain divine favors?

Where is the guide through whom I hope for right direction

To the paths of lofty attainments and guidance?

Where is the spiritual path, the secrets of whose glimmer are

A lamp of light for the niche of intimate prayer?

Where is the purity whose traces preceded

The day of departure for the abode of bliss?

How can I escape, when the graves of wretchedness are my homeland,

And the hands of misfortune have flung me into them?

How can I journey to the land of hopes, while I

Am bound in error's chains through obedience to the self?

How can I turn, by straight paths, from the crookedness

That has led my striving to the abode of regrets?

How can I depart without provisions or a mount

Beneath me on my journey to the land of uprightness?

I have saddlebags weighed down with sins,

And toil-worn white camels, too weary to fulfill my wishes.

    وَكَيفَ اِبلَغ أَقطار السَلامات

    So, O people of resolve, untie the knots of my difficulty;

And how shall I reach the realms of safety?

I reproached my soul for what was lost of my life

    In distractions, heedlessness, and lapses.

Yet it opposed my purpose in ignorance and took no warning,

And life's brief moment passed away in loss.

Were my eye to weep until the Resurrection, it would not be too high a price

For the sins of a day spent in ignorance.

And were my heart to shatter in anguish and sorrow

Over my past neglect of my hours,

It would yield me nothing but the beating of my palm in remorse

For my grievous wrongs and heedlessness.

If my fear has lasted long, hope has revived my hope

In the Forgiver of sin, the Creator of the heavens.

The lightly burdened have triumphed, and the trustworthy have hastened toward

The Abode of Peace and the Paradise of honors.

And my concern was my submission, my lapse, my sorrow,

And laying my cheek upon the ground of humiliation.

And obedience to my evil-commanding soul has fettered me,

Keeping me from reaching the utmost limits of perfection.

So, weighed down by sins, I found no refuge but

The courts of forgiveness of the All-Knower of hidden things.
