O you who lost a letter I had given,

Abandoning the letter is like abandoning its sender.

Loved ones preserve a lover's notes,

Yet you yourself have lost a letter of entreaty.

And why do you ask for it to be sent again,

And waste it, as though it had never been sent?

    وَسِوى الَّتي اِتلَفَتها لَم اِنقَل

    There is no copy, should you wish it repeated;

And I transcribed none but the one you destroyed.

My mind composed it extempore, and it was not

Written down then, even in unpointed script.

O peerless one, whose eminence has strung for him

Pearls of praise for the finest perfection,

Leave me with what illness has wrought, for I have

A body upon those wasted bones.

Illness keeps me occupied, away from sending what

You seek; I shall send it when I am unoccupied.

Orderly composition requires a mind, and

Thought, and a heart free of the world.
