أَهيل الحَي هَل لاحت بدور
وَهلand whether وافىarrived مَعwith الصُبحthe dawn البَشيرthe bearer of good news
وَهل وافى مَع الصُبح البَشير
O dear folk of the quarter, have full moons appeared?
Have the loved ones come in sight
And has the bearer of good news arrived with dawn?
And brought the joyful dawn with them?
وَهَلand whether جادَwas generous الزَمانtime بِجَمعwith the gathering of مالwealth
وَهَل جادَ الزَمان بِجَمع مال
وَحَياand greeted بِالرِضاwith favor دَهرtime غدورtreacherous
وَحَيا بِالرِضا دَهر غدور
And has time been generous with the gathering of wealth?
Has time been generous with wealth
And has treacherous time offered a gracious greeting?
And lived content through ages rough?
وَهلand whether تَروىare quenched الجَوانِحthe heart's depths بِالتَلاقىthrough reunion
وَهل تَروى الجَوانِح بِالتَلاقى
وَتُسعِفُنيand come to my aid الاِمانيhopes وَالجُسورand bridges
وَتُسعِفُني الاِماني وَالجُسور
And will the heart's depths be quenched by reunion?
Do longing souls their thirst now ease
And will hopes and bridges come to my aid?
And grant me hope and confidence?
مَتىwhen يَزهىblossoms بِطلعتِهِمat their appearance سُرورىmy joy
مَتى يَزهى بِطلعتِهِم سُرورى
وَيَشفىand heals مهجَتيmy heart ذاكَthat السُرورjoy
وَيَشفى مهجَتي ذاكَ السُرور
When will my joy blossom at the sight of them,
When will their sight give joy to me
and that joy heal my heart?
And heal my heart that joy withal?
