وَعفتand I shunned حَنينyearning قَلبيmy heart وَهُوَand it is روحيmy soul
I lowered my eyes from one whose figure was a supple bough;
I lowered my eyes from a bough-like figure.
my heart renounced my longing, though it is my very soul.
And I shunned my heart’s yearning, though it is my soul.
فَلَوso if عقبpursued الهَوىpassion قَلبيmy heart وَقالَتand said
اِذنthen روحيmy soul أَروحI go لقالit would say روحيgo!
Had my heart followed passion, and my soul said,
So if passion pursued my heart, and said
“Then I shall depart,” my heart would have replied, “Depart!”
my soul then, “I shall go,” it would say, “Go.”
وَأَفكاريand my thoughts تَسوحwander لفرطfrom the intensity of شَوقيmy longing
فَأَطوىso I fold away لَوعَتيmy anguish وَأَقولُand I say سوحىwander!
My thoughts roam from the extremity of my longing;
And my thoughts wander from the intensity of my longing;
I fold away my anguish and tell them, “Roam.”
so I fold away my anguish and say, “Wander.”

For a gazelle my eye has wept and said,
For a gazelle, my eye has indeed wept and said,
“I shall wail until the Resurrection.” I said, “Then wail.”
“I shall wail until the Resurrection.” So I said, “Wail.”
