A heart whose longing knows no bounds, broken and aching,

Offers its greeting, gentler than the breeze.

And reveals yearning as love would have it,

And speaks of love and of peaceful affection.

The beloved ones broke their pledge, though it

Forever abides by my pledge of chaste love.

I swear by passion's torment—and indeed it is

A mighty oath, even if the reproacher does not know.

    لَست اِمرأ يَصغى لِهماز نَميم

    Not for an instant has it died to love's covenant;

I am not someone who heeds a slandering talebearer.

And so I directed my reproach; it is simply

A close friend's way to reproach a dear companion.

I never expected, in your love, what I now see:

That time deals basely with every friend.

And I thought you truthful in the claims that

You made before; yet some supposition is misguided and sinful.

And it is shameful for a person to break his promises,

Especially if he is of noble descent.

And honors are his if his deeds proceed

Along their course toward the straight path.
