وَفيand in اللَواحِظthe glances تَحذيرwarning وَاِغراءand enticement
Sickness lies in the eyelid, and gestures in the lashes;
With eyelids sick and eyebrows beckoning
and in the glances, warning and enticement.
In glances, warning and temptation dwelling
وَبِالحَواجِبand in the eyebrows نونthe letter nūn وَالعذارand the sideburn بِهِin it
لامَthe letter lām وَخالاهand his two moles مَعwith وُجناتِهhis cheeks تاءthe letter tāʾ
And the eyebrows form a nūn, while the sideburn bears
With arched brows, a noon, and with coquetry
a lām; his two moles, with his cheeks, form a tāʾ.
A lam, while moles and dimples are a taa

And his stature is like a bough; were it not for his eyebrow's arrows,
The stature like a branch; but for the brow’s nobility
a gray dove would sing upon him when he stood still.
It would have, if not walking tall, bent and swayed
لِلَهِto God درexcellence, in an expression of praise الثَناياthe front teeth كَمhow many لسلسلهاfor their sweet water (saliva)

God bless those front teeth! Of their sweet water, how many
What secrets do the soft folds hide!
tales and tidings there are among the narrators!
What tales and news for narrators to relay!

After my life had grown green, its luster turned dust-gray,
After my life has lost its verdant grace,
and my tears are red at the whiteness of my temple's hair.
My tears turn red the cheeks’ white robe to stain
وَالجِفنand the eyelid أَهدىbestowed لَناon us بِالاِنكِسارwith languid drooping جَوىheartache

And the eyelid, with its languid droop, bestowed heartache on us;
The closing lids relay an aching heart’s distress.
and how could gift-giving be sound amid sickness?
How can the sick at heart bear dedication?
