Ah, by God, you who weary me

with wine that heals the ailing breast!

So one like me, in his wavering,

is excused at the hands of love.

    We consulted my heart,

and my excuse is that I am under orders.

Then he said: if tomorrow brings

a meeting with me, it will be blessed.

But as for today, my apologies

to you, for I am worn out.

    Yesterday's drink overcame me,

    so watch my drooping eyelid.

I shall keep my promise to you, O you,

and my striving in love is appreciated.

Then I said to him: are you jesting with me

and depriving me of beholding the light?

Do you mock me because you do

    always see me cast out?

    If indeed you are Ridwan,

I shall have the houris as my example.

So take heed, you, of my ruin,

and beware the burning anguish of the forsaken.

And live your earthly life smiling,

and in your hereafter, be rewarded.
