أَضحى بِمَعتَل النَسيمِ عَليلا
O full moon, be gentle with the heart, for it
O full moon, be gentle with my heart, for it
Has grown ill from the ailing breeze,
Has become frail in the delicate breeze,

Bearing my greetings to you
Each day, at dawn and in the evening.
Each dawn and dusk without fail.

اِذ ما اِتَّخَذَت سِواه قَط رَسولا
So it has done me a kindness for which I owe thanks,
It alone has the honor of conveying my gratitude
Since I have never chosen any messenger but it.
For never sending another messenger in its stead.

يَحتاجُ شَرحاً في هَواك طَويلا
If I seek to reveal my heart's secret, it
If I hesitate to bare my soul, know that
Needs a long explanation of my love for you.
It requires great length to explain my passion for you.

A lovesick sufferer who has wasted life on 'but' and 'if,'
Alas, a life wasted in "if only" and "perhaps,"
And 'perhaps'—yet words have not healed the ailing.
Yet words cannot heal a frail heart.

حَتّى يَرى خمل القَميصِ ثَقيلا
And he has become clad in weakness that has harmed his body,
So weakened with sorrow that it ruined his health,
Until he finds even the nap of his shirt heavy.
That even the shirt's creases feel heavy.
