أَتَهديDo you offer بِالزُهورwith flowers لِطيبfor the sweetness of عرفfragrance
أَتَهدي بِالزُهور لِطيب عرف
وَنَفحand the waft of العطرperfume فيهاin them مُستَعارborrowed
وَنَفح العطر فيها مُستَعار
Do you offer flowers for their sweet scent,
You bring flowers of sweet fragrance
while the waft of perfume in them is borrowed?
Whose borrowed scents the breezes enhance
وَفيand in الاِنفاسِbreaths ماthat which يَنسيmakes one forget شَذاهاtheir fragrance
وَفي الاِنفاسِ ما يَنسي شَذاها
وَاِنand even if يَكُit may be فيin الرِياضِthe gardens لَهfor it اِزدِهارflourishing
وَاِن يَكُ في الرِياضِ لَه اِزدِهار
And in breaths is what makes one forget their fragrance,
Though gardens in bloom their perfumes outdo
even though it may flourish in the gardens.
The breath of your lips makes me their aroma rue
فَخاطِبso address مِنthe one whom شَغفتyou are enamored بِهِof him شَفاهاorally
فَخاطِب مِن شَغفت بِهِ شَفاها
غَذاءnourishment of الروحthe soul ذاكَthat الاِعتِطارperfuming
غَذاء الروح ذاكَ الاِعتِطار
So speak face to face to the one you love;
So speak, my heart's craving, and let your mouth move
that perfuming is nourishment for the soul.
To nourish my soul that it may forever improve
