ماwhat ليfor me لِماbecause صَدنيhe shunned me
تَرَكتُI left فيin التيهthe wilderness سدىaimless
What ails me? Because he shunned me,
Why am I blamed when I was led astray?
I left myself aimless in the wilderness.
I was left wandering aimlessly in bewilderment.
لاnot السامِريal-Samiri أَضَلَّنيled me astray
وَلَمand did not أُجاوِزI go beyond مَوعِداan appointed time
It was not al-Samiri who led me astray,
It was not the Samaritan that misguided me,
Nor did I go beyond an appointed time,
Nor did I miss an appointed time,
حَتّىso that أَقولَI should say أَسَفاin sorrow
ياO قَلبُheart جَرَعتyou have drunk الرَدىdeath
That I should say in sorrow:
Until I say in sorrow:
O heart, you have drunk death!
Oh heart, you have tasted bitterness.
ماnot ذاكَthat اِلّاexcept قَلبَهُhis heart
طورa Mount بِهِupon it لبيhe answered النَداthe call
That is nothing but his heart—
That was just his heart,
A Mount where he answered the call.
Which once turned away from guidance.
هبنىsuppose I اِقتَرَفتcommitted زلةa slip
فاقَتexceeded عَنِbeyond الطورِthe bounds اِعتِداin transgression
Suppose I committed a slip
Grant me, I have slipped,
That overstepped the bounds in transgression:
And exceeded the proper limit.
فَاِنَّنيfor indeed I مِنfrom آدَمAdam
وَهُوَand he اِمامan exemplar لِلهُدىfor guidance
For I am descended from Adam,
For I am from Adam,
And he is an exemplar of guidance.
Who was a leader of guidance.
وَقَدand indeed عَصىdisobeyed مَولاهُhis Lord اِذwhen
مَدَّhe stretched out اِلىtoward البِرِّthe wheat (contextual reading) يَداa hand
And he had disobeyed his Lord when
Yet he disobeyed his Master
He stretched a hand toward the wheat.
When he stretched out his hand to the tree.
ثُمَّthen اِجتَباهُchose him مَولاهُhis Lord اِذwhen
تابَturned in mercy عَلَيهِtoward him وَهُدىand guided him
Then his Lord chose him when
Then his Master chose him again when
He turned to him in mercy and guided him.
He repented to Him and was guided.
