Once, the elements of my body were untouched by
My body's elements were not afflicted by
Illness's drizzle; now a downpour has come upon them.
The onslaught of illnesses, until it overtook them.
وَكَيفَand how لاnot وَبِقَلبيand in my heart زَفرَةa deep sigh وَعَناand suffering

And how could it be otherwise, with a deep sigh and suffering in my heart,
How could they not be, when my heart exhales with sighs,
And the eyes of graceful maidens recounting magic from Babylon?
And the eyes of the gazelle quench their magic from the rainwater.

And treatment has turned away from the sick body, so I do not
From its illness, my body has rejected treatment, so I do not
Find my heart receptive to draughts of healing.
See my heart accepting doses of remedy.
لَوif شَخصdiagnosed الداءthe illness جالينوسGalen أَعجَزَهُwould defeat him

Were Galen to diagnose the illness, it would defeat him,
If Galen had examined this sickness, it would have defeated him,
And Luqman would say, 'Entrusting me with it is futile.'
And Luqman would say that treating me was futile.
كَيفَhow الشِفاءُhealing وَمَنwhile the one whom أَهواهُI love him فارَقَنيhas left me
اِنَّindeed الجَوىlove's anguish بَحرa sea بِلاwithout ساحِلa shore
How can there be healing when the one I love has left me?
How can there be healing, when the one I love left me?
Far beyond reach! Love's anguish is a sea without a shore.
Alas, ardent love is an endless sea.
جاءَcame الطَبيبُthe doctor يُداوينيto treat me فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him
دَعleave عَنكَaway from you طبيmy treatment وَلاand do not تَتعَبtire yourself بِلاwithout طائِلbenefit
The doctor came to treat me, so I said to him:
The doctor came to treat me, so I said:
Leave my treatment aside, and do not weary yourself in vain.
Leave off your medicine, do not tire yourself in vain.
تَعذرbecame impossible الطِبtreatment وَالبرءand recovery اِنزَوىwithdrew وَنَأىand grew distant

عَنّيfrom me وَلَونىand my complexion مِنfrom فِعلthe effect الهَوىof love حائِلchanged
Treatment has proved impossible; recovery has withdrawn and gone far
Medicine and recovery have avoided and shunned me,
From me, and my complexion has changed through love's influence.
Prevented by the deeds of passion.
ماwhat يَنفَعُavails الطِبmedicine وَالاِحشاءwhile the innards فيin حَرقburning

What use is medicine when my innards are burning
Medicine and physicians are useless for a burning heart,
And my eyelid's tears rain down from the intensity of my longing?
And the eyelids overflow with tears.
اِنif كُنتَyou are تُنكِرdeny ماwhat بيin me مِنof جَوىlove's anguish وَضَنىand wasting sickness
فَجِسthen feel نَبضيmy pulse فَهُوَfor it is الشاهِدthe witness العادِلimpartial
If you deny the anguish of love and wasting sickness that afflict me,
If you doubt the passion and longing within me,
Then feel my pulse, for it is the impartial witness.
Then feel my pulse, for it is the just witness.
فَقالَthen he said ليto me بَعدafter جسfeeling النَبضِthe pulse واoh!
الداءُthe illness اِنif عَظُمتَgrow severe أَعراضُهُits symptoms قاتَلdeadly
Then, after feeling my pulse, he said to me: Alas!
He said to me after feeling the pulse, alas:
The illness, if its symptoms grow severe, is deadly.
If its symptoms are severe, the disease is fatal.
