spreading banners of light across the horizon.

يبعث الأطيار في أوْكارها   

يبعث الأطيار في أوْكارها

فتحيِّيه بترديد الغناءْ

فتحيِّيه بترديد الغناءْ

It awakens the birds in their nests,

It rouses the birds in their nests

so they greet it with refrains of song.

So they greet it with melodious song

قد سهرتُ الليلَ وحدي

قد سهرتُ الليلَ وحدي

بين آلامي وسُهْدي

بين آلامي وسُهْدي

I have kept vigil through the night by myself,

I stayed up all night alone

amid my pains and sleeplessness.

Between my sorrows and wakefulness

وانجلى الصبح وهلاَّ   

وانجلى الصبح وهلاَّ

وانطوى الليل وولَّى

وانطوى الليل وولَّى

And morning emerged and dawned,

The morning dawned bright

and night folded itself away and departed.

The night folded up and turned away

فتذكّرتُ الذي كان وراحا

فتذكّرتُ الذي كان وراحا

حين أفنيناه أُنساً ومِراحا

حين أفنيناه أُنساً ومِراحا

Then I remembered what had been and was gone,

Then I remembered what had been and gone

when we spent it in companionship and merriment.

When we lost him, gentle and kind

وجرى دمعيَ من فرْطِ حنيني

وجرى دمعيَ من فرْطِ حنيني

فارحمي قلبي وحنِّي واذكريني

فارحمي قلبي وحنِّي واذكريني

And my tears flowed from the intensity of my longing,

And my tears flowed from longing

so pity my heart, be tender, and remember me.

So have mercy on my heart, sympathize, and remember me

مرسلاً في الدوحِ ألحان الصفاءْ

مرسلاً في الدوحِ ألحان الصفاءْ

Remember me whenever the birds sing,

Remember me whenever the birds sing out

sending melodies of serenity among the spreading trees.

Sending melodies soaring through the air

يُنصت الزهرُ إلى أنغامه   

يُنصت الزهرُ إلى أنغامه

فيحيِّيه ببشْرٍ وانحناءْ

فيحيِّيه ببشْرٍ وانحناءْ

The blossoms listen to their melodies,

The flowers listen to their tunes

so they greet them with gladness and bows.

And greet them with cheer and swaying

قد ظللتُ اليوم أبكي

قد ظللتُ اليوم أبكي

من أذى دهري ومنكِ

من أذى دهري ومنكِ

I have spent the day weeping,

Today I spent weeping

from the hurt brought by my fate and by you.

From the torment of fate and you

وشدا الطيرُ وغنَّى

وشدا الطيرُ وغنَّى

وتناجى وتهنّى

وتناجى وتهنّى

And the birds warbled and sang,

The birds sang out and rejoiced

and exchanged whispers and rejoiced.

Conversing and celebrating

فتذكّرتُ الذي طاف بسمعي

فتذكّرتُ الذي طاف بسمعي

إذ مزجت الكأس في كفِّي بدمعي

إذ مزجت الكأس في كفِّي بدمعي

Then I remembered what had drifted to my ears,

Then I remembered what had touched my hearing

when I mingled the cup in my hand with my tears.

When I mixed the cup in my hand with my tears

وهفا قلبيَ من طولِ أنيني

وهفا قلبيَ من طولِ أنيني

فارحمي دمعي وغنِّي واذكريني

فارحمي دمعي وغنِّي واذكريني

And my heart fluttered from my prolonged lament,

And my heart quivered from prolonged lamenting

so pity my tears, sing, and remember me.

So have mercy on my tears, sing, and remember me

اذكريني كلّما الليلُ سجَا

اذكريني كلّما الليلُ سجَا

باعثاً في النفس ذكرى الأوفياء

باعثاً في النفس ذكرى الأوفياء

Remember me whenever night grows still,

Remember me whenever the night descends

awakening in the soul the memory of the faithful.

Evoking memories of loyalty

يعرض الماضي ويجْلو صفحةً

يعرض الماضي ويجْلو صفحةً

أشرق الإخلاصُ فيها والولاءْ

أشرق الإخلاصُ فيها والولاءْ

It displays the past and reveals a page

The past parades by and reveals a page

where sincerity and loyalty shone.

Where sincerity and loyalty shone bright

قد سقيت الحبَّ وُدِّي

قد سقيت الحبَّ وُدِّي

ورعيتُ العمرَ عهْدي

ورعيتُ العمرَ عهْدي

I have watered love with my affection,

I nurtured my love and loyalty

and guarded my pledge throughout my life.

And spent my life true to my vow

وبدا لي ما ألاقي

وبدا لي ما ألاقي

من تباريحِ الفراقِ

من تباريحِ الفراقِ

And it became clear to me what I endure

What I encountered was revealed to me

of the agonies of separation.

فتذكرت ليالينا المواضي

فتذكرت ليالينا المواضي

بين شكوى وَتَجنٍّ وتراضِ

بين شكوى وَتَجنٍّ وتراضِ

Then I remembered our nights gone by,

Then I remembered our nights in the meadows

amid complaint, unjust reproach, and reconciliation.

Between complaining, yearning, and consenting

واشتكتْ روحيَ من نار شجوني

واشتكتْ روحيَ من نار شجوني

فصِليني بالتَّمَنِّي واذكريني

فصِليني بالتَّمَنِّي واذكريني

And my soul lamented the fire of my sorrows,

And my soul complained of the fire of my longing

so unite with me through longing, and remember me.

So join me in wishing, and remember me
