بـنـاتَdaughters الـشعرِof poetry ماwhat ألهاكِhas distracted you عنّيfrom me
ومـاذاand what نَـفَّـرَhas driven away الأشـعارَthe poems منّيfrom me
Daughters of poetry, what has distracted you from me?
And what has driven poems away from me?
لـقدindeed عَزَّتْhave grown elusive علىto نفسيmy soul القوافيthe rhymes
وكُـنْـتُand I was بِـهنَّwith them مُطَّرِدَunceasing in التغنّيsinging
Rhymes have indeed grown elusive to my soul,
Though I once sang them without cease.
وكـمand how many فيin العينِthe eye منof دمعٍtears سخينٍhot
إذاwhen أرسـلـتـهI let it flow رَفَّـهْتُI brought relief عنّيto myself
And how many burning tears the eye holds!
When I let them flow, I find relief.
وكيفand how تطيبُsound sweet فيin سَمعيmy hearing الأغانيsongs
وألـحـانwhile melodies الأسـىof sorrow يَملأنَfill أُذنيmy ear
And how can songs delight my hearing,
While melodies of sorrow fill my ear?
دعـيـنيlet me ياO بناتَdaughters الشِّعْرِof poetry أبكيweep
عـلـىover مـاwhat نَالَتِhave taken الأيامُthe days مِنّيfrom me
Let me, O daughters of poetry, weep
Over what the days have taken from me:
أَمَـانٍhopes مـتْـنَdied فيin قلبيmy heart صغاراًyoung
كماas ذَوَتِwithered الكمائمُthe buds فوقupon غُصْنِa branch
Hopes that died young within my heart,
As buds withered upon a branch;
وزَرْعٍand a crop طـابَripened لَـمْdid not أقطفI pick جناهُits fruit
وكمand how much بَذَرَتْhave sown يدايmy hands ولستُyet I am not أَجنيI reap
And a crop that ripened, whose fruit I never picked.
And how much my hands have sown, yet I do not reap!
فـكـونيso be ياO بناتَdaughters الشِّعْرِof poetry أهليmy family
وأشـياعيand my allies لَدَىduring البلوىaffliction ورُكْنِيand my mainstay
So be my family, O daughters of poetry,
And my allies in affliction, and my mainstay.
وغَـنِّـيand sing مـنfrom أساكِyour sorrow وألهمينيand inspire me
فـبـينكِfor between you فيin الهوىlove عَهْدٌa covenant وبينيand between me
And sing from your sorrow, and inspire me,
For between you and me is a covenant of love.
أَرَاكِI see you بِـخـاطـريin my mind وأودُّand I wish أنـيthat I
أراكِI see you بـنـاظـريَّwith my two eyes وأنْand that تَـرَيْنيyou see me
I see you in my mind, and I wish that I
Could see you with my eyes, and that you could see me.
إِذَنْthen أشفقتِyou would feel pity منat سقميmy sickness ووجديand my yearning
وَشَفَّكِand would consume you لاعجيmy burning anguish وشحوبُand the pallor لونيof my complexion
Then my sickness and yearning would move you to pity,
And my burning anguish and pallor would consume you.
لـقـدindeed تَـرَكَتْنِيَhave left me الأيامُthe days نِضْوَاًwasted away
أودّI wish مـنof الـزمـانtime دُنُوّthe approach حَيْنيof my death
Indeed, the days have left me wasted,
I wish for time to bring my death near.
فـبـكِّـينيso weep for me إذاwhen همدتْlie still عظاميmy bones
ونـوحـيand lament حولaround مقبرتيmy grave بلحنيto my melody
So weep for me when my bones lie still,
And lament around my grave to my melody.
عـشـقتكِI loved you ياO بناتَdaughters الشِّعْرِof poetry حيَّاًalive
فـلاso do not تـنسيforget عهوديmy vows بعدafter بَيْنيmy departure
I have loved you in life, O daughters of poetry;
So do not forget my vows after I am gone.
