The lovesick one's eyes betray him,

and his ways reveal his passion.

Indeed, we have concealed our love,

yet the deadliest sickness is the hidden one.

    The doves' lament stirs us,

and how often their moaning moves us!

    ـمَ، فهل يؤدِّيها أمينه

    And we entrust our kisses to the breeze;

will its trusted bearer deliver them?

Hearts have hardened; is there for your heart,

my beloved, someone to soften it,

so you may soothe a lovesick heart,

    sorrowful, whose griefs never sleep?

    Memories have passed through it,

and its yearning for the past lingers on.

And I am your confidant, and the one

who gives you drink from my love's downpour.

And what is in you is in me—I wonder,

my secret and yours—who will guard them?
