ولكن رأيت الفقر شر سبيل

O reproacher, miserliness is not my nature.

I'm not miserly, but frugal out of wisdom -

But I have found poverty the worst of paths.

Poverty's path leads to ruin, I've seen.

لموت الفتى خير من البخل للفتى

لموت الفتى خير من البخل للفتى

وللبخل خير من سؤال بخيل

وللبخل خير من سؤال بخيل

Surely, a young man's death is better for him than miserliness.

Better for a man to die than live miserly.

And surely, miserliness is better than begging from a miser.

Better to be miserly than beg meanly.

لعمرك ما شيء كوجهك قيمة

لعمرك ما شيء كوجهك قيمة

فلا تلق إنساناً بوجه ذليل

فلا تلق إنساناً بوجه ذليل

By your life, nothing matches your face in worth.

By your life nothing's worth as your face's honor -

So do not meet anyone with an abased face.

Don't meet people with a face disgraced, humiliated.
