    Who among humankind has not spent a night in bitterness?

    And what life has been free of hardship?

    يغْري فراقُ الأحياءِ بالسهدِ

    And parting from the living brings a grievous blow;

    parting from the living drives one to sleeplessness.

    My right hand has departed, and I am not the first

    to wipe away tears over one hand with the other.

    ـنيهِ وآوى منهُ إلى سندِ

    O companion, I used to seek shade beneath your two

    pillars, and find in you a firm support;

    you course through the heart, the ribs, and the

    entrails as my soul courses through the body.

    I used to complain to you of whatever wearied the

    soul, and complained of it to no one else.

    So I shall call upon you by your true name for

    help, with the cry of one stripped of fortitude.

    O return of my gaze, and O my right hand in

    terror, and O my lifeblood, and O my liver!

    May the nights replace your remoteness with

    nearness, and aid us against distance.
