وَقالواand they said ليto me أَلاwill you not تَرثيlament عَلِيّاًAli
وَقَدand already وارَىconcealed مَحاسِنَهُhis charms التُّرابُthe dust
And they said to me: Will you not lament Ali,
They said to me, "Will you not mourn Ali
now that the dust has concealed his charms?
When dust has concealed his beautiful traits?"
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them وَفيwhile in نَفسِيmy soul عَلَيهِagainst him
بَقاياremnants لَمdid not يُغَيِّرهاchange them العِتابُreproach
So I said to them, though in my heart I still harbored against him
So I said to them, while grieving for him,
remnants of resentment that reproach had not changed:
"There remain in my soul remnants untouched by blame,
نَعاءannounce the death إِلىto المَكارِمِnoble virtues وَالمَعاليand lofty honors
فَقيداًone lost ماno لِغَيبَتِهِfor his absence إِيابُreturn
Announce to noble virtues and lofty honors the death of
Yearning for nobility and loftiness.
one lost, from whose absence there is no return.
His absence is no barrier, for he will return.
فَماso what فَعَلَdid اِعتِدالُكَyour upright stature وَالتَّثَنِّيand graceful swaying
وَماand what فَعَلَتdid ثَناياكَyour front teeth العِذابُsweet
So what has become of your upright stature and graceful swaying,
What has your moderation and double-dealing done?
and what has become of your sweet front teeth?
What have your torturous duplicities accomplished?
أَظُنُّI think الدَّهرَTime ضَنَّwas miserly بِهِwith him عَلَيناtoward us
فَنَحنُso we عَلىwith الزَّمانِTime إِذاًthen غِضابُangry
I think Time begrudged him to us;
I think time has begrudged him to us,
so we are angry, then, with Time.
So we harbor resentment against this era.
وَمَنand whoever لَمdoes not يَرضَfeel content بِالأَيّامِwith the days حُكماًjudgment
وَلَمand does not يَصبِرendure patiently يَطُلwill be prolonged مِنهُfrom him اِنتِحابُsobbing
And whoever is not content with the judgment of the days,
He who does not accept the days' judgments,
and does not endure, will sob for long.
And lacks patience, will prolong his suffering."
