توصيات الأخِ الكبيرِ إليه
The year arrived, carrying in his hands
The year came bearing in its hands
the elder brother’s instructions to him.
The elder brother's last requests to him
قالhe said: إنيindeed I تركتُI left إرثاًa legacy ورائيbehind me
قال: إني تركتُ إرثاً ورائي
تتباكىweep mournfully قُرىvillages اليتامَىthe orphans عليهover it
تتباكى قُرى اليتامَى عليه
He said: I have indeed left a legacy behind me
He said: I left behind me an inheritance
over which the villages of orphans weep.
Over which the orphan villages weep
كمmany a فَتىyoung man حامَhovered حولَهaround it وتمنَّىand wished
كم فَتى حامَ حولَه وتمنَّى
أنto يُناجيcommune with بسِحرِهthrough its magic أصْغَرَيْهِhis heart and tongue
أن يُناجي بسِحرِه أصْغَرَيْهِ
Many a youth hovered around it and wished
How many a lad hoped round him and wished
to commune, through its magic, with his heart and tongue.
To whisper to him with his magic the name of his beloved
زَمْجَرتْsnarled ألسُنٌtongues عليهat him حدادٌsharp
زَمْجَرتْ ألسُنٌ عليه حدادٌ
فنَعىso he lamented حَظَّهhis lot إلىto مقلتيهhis two eyes
فنَعى حَظَّه إلى مقلتيه
Sharp tongues snarled at him,
Tongues clamored in mourning over him
so he lamented his lot to his eyes.
And he carried his fortune in his eyelashes
