وفَرَّ أرْبابُهُ واستوطنوا الطُّرُقا
The house of joys, O my sweet basil, has burned down.
The house of pleasures, O my basil, burned down
And its owners fled and made the roads their home.
And its owners fled and settled on the roads

فتَاةُ أحلام مولاهُ الذي غَرقا
Do not ask me who the culprit is—for perhaps
Do not ask me who the culprit is, although
it is the dream girl of its master, who drowned.
The girl of dreams, her Master is He who drowned

وجرَّع الهَمُّ عَيْنيْها الكَرَى أرقا
She said: “Through treachery she has indeed burned her reputation,
She said they burned her reputation by betrayal
and grief made her eyes swallow sleeplessness in place of slumber.”
And worry made her tearful eyes sleepless

So I said: “Had she been fair, she would have preserved her dignity,
So I said: If she was equitable she'd have protected her dignity
and no liver would have spent the night in shreds from her scheming.”
And no liver would be torn to shreds by her schemes
