أعْرَضَتْshe turned away عَنْكَfrom you حينwhen أقْبلتَyou approached تَسْعىyou strive
لَمْdid not تَجدْshe finds مَشْرَباًa watering place لَدَيكَwith you ومَرْعىand a pasture
She turned away from you when you came striving.
You turned away when I came seeking you,
She found with you neither a watering place nor a pasture.
You found no drink or pasture with me.
أغْلَقَتْshe shut دونَكَagainst you النَّوافذَthe windows كَيْلاlest
تَتْرُكَleave القَلْبَthe heart والشرايينَand the arteries صَرْعَىlaid low
She shut the windows against you, lest
You closed your windows in my face
The heart and arteries be left laid low.
Lest I leave the heart and veins languished.
أنتَyou أسرَفْتَyou went to excess فيin المَلاحةِbeauty حتَّىuntil
ضاقgrew constrained بالموْجِby the waves عاشقُthe lover البَحْرof the sea ذَرْعاin endurance
You carried your beauty to excess, until
You overdid the sailing until
The lover of the sea could no longer bear the waves.
The lover of the sea was vexed by the waves.
مَنْwhoever تَنَمْslumber راحتاهُhis two palms عَزْماًin resolve وبّذْلاًand in giving

He whose palms slumber in resolve and giving
He who finds comfort in determination and generosity
Fails as a branch in the spreading tree of heroic deeds.
Will fail in the arena of heroism.
