هَلْis it? منfrom حسْرةٍheartache فيin الحُبِّlove أمor نَصَباweariness
She said: I see you absent-minded and troubled.
She said: I see you lost in thought, perturbed
Is it from heartache in love, or weariness?
Is it from sorrow in love or from distress?
القومُthe people حولَكَaround you قدalready ألْقَوْاthey have cast دِلاءَهُمُtheir buckets
وأنتَand you ماnot زِلْتَyou have ceased فيin الأوهامِillusions مغترباan exile
The people around you have already cast their buckets,
The people around you have cast their gossip
And you are still an exile amid illusions.
While you remain secluded in your musings

نوكاءَfoolish تَسْقيshe gives to drink بَنيهاher sons اللَّغْوَidle talk والكذباand lies
Let what they say be an old woman in their gatherings,
Leave what they say, we gnawed on in their gatherings
A foolish one, giving her sons idle talk and lies to drink.
Chatter that nourishes lies and nonsense in them
واكتُبْand write قصيدتكَyour poem العصماءَmasterful صاعقةًa thunderbolt
لاno رأسhead تتْرُكُهُit leaves it فيهمْamong them ولاand no ذنباtail
And write your masterful poem as a thunderbolt,
And write your flawless ode, striking
Leaving among them neither a head nor a tail.
Leaving no head or tail intact among them
