كمْmany a قُبلةٍkiss جرَّعَتْكَmade you swallow السُّمَthe poison فيin العسلthe honey
She said, “Awake, you who are bewitched by kisses!
She said: "Wake up, O you who are infatuated with kisses,

How many a kiss has made you drink poison in honey?
عامٌa year مضىpassed خضَّبَstained الكفينboth palms منfrom دمناour blood
وغالand ravaged وحدتناour unity بالوهنwith weakness والحيلand guile
A year has passed, staining both palms with our blood,
A year has passed, dyeing our palms with blood,
and ravaging our unity with weakness and guile.
And our separation became frail with weakness and cunning.
ونحنُand we فيin غفلةٍheedlessness عماof what يحاكُis being plotted لناfor us

And we are heedless of what is being plotted against us;
While we were heedless of what was being plotted against us,
we slumber in shame, awaken in dread.”
We slept in negligence, and woke up in turmoil.

So I said, “That is an ailment: we have no escape
So I said: 'This is an ailment with no escape for us
from its grip—how, then, can there be healing, O my hope?”
From its grip, so how can we be cured, O my hope?'
