ياO أمُّmother إunclear fragment سقطتْhas fallen أمامَكِbefore you أمَّةٌa nation
يا أمُّ إ سقطتْ أمامَكِ أمَّةٌ
برصاصِby the bullets of مأفونٍa madman وخِنْجرِand the dagger of أبْلهِa fool
برصاصِ مأفونٍ وخِنْجرِ أبْلهِ
O mother—[unclear fragment]—a nation has fallen before you,
O mother, if a nation has fallen before you
By a madman's bullets and a fool's dagger.
By cursed bullets and a foolish dagger,
لاdo not تأسفيlament لاdo not تحْزنيgrieve بلْrather رَدِّديrepeat
لا تأسفي لا تحْزني بلْ رَدِّدي
ياO أرضُearth تيهيtake pride بالحضارةِin civilization وازدهيand exult
يا أرضُ تيهي بالحضارةِ وازدهي
Do not lament, do not grieve; rather, repeat:
Do not grieve or be sad, but keep repeating:
O earth, take pride in civilization and exult!
O land, lost in civilization, be glorious!
هذاthis زمانٌan age ساقناdrove us قدَرٌfate لكيso that
هذا زمانٌ ساقنا قدَرٌ لكي
نتجرَّعَwe may gulp down الموتَdeath الزُّؤامَswift and fatal بحِضْنِهِin its embrace
نتجرَّعَ الموتَ الزُّؤامَ بحِضْنِهِ
This is an age; fate has driven us so that
This is an age that fate has destined for us
We may gulp down swift, fatal death in its embrace.
To drink death's bitter cup in its embrace.
أقطابهُits leaders شطَحَتْran wild بِهِمْwith them أحلامُهُمْtheir dreams
أقطابهُ شطَحَتْ بِهِمْ أحلامُهُمْ
فَرَمواso they cast بناus منout of عَدْلِهمْtheir justice فيinto مَهْمَهِa trackless desert
فَرَموا بنا من عَدْلِهمْ في مَهْمَهِ
Its leaders were carried wildly astray by their dreams,
Its tyrants' dreams have led them astray
So, out of their justice, they cast us into a trackless desert.
And they have thrown us from their justice into oblivion.
