ياO عيدُEid ماwhat للقومِwith the people منfrom أثوابهمtheir garments
ربحُprofit الحضارةcivilization بالعقوقِwith ingratitude تفوحُreeks؟
O Eid, what ails the people, that from their garments
O Eid, what good are the people's clothes
Civilization's profit reeks of ingratitude?
When civilization's gain reeks of filial impiety?
هذاthis one يبيعُsells ضميرهُhis conscience بدراهمٍfor dirhams
سَفَهاًout of folly وذلكand that one بالعطاءin giving شحيحُmiserly
This one sells his conscience for dirhams
One sells his conscience for coins, a fool,
Out of folly, while that one is miserly in giving.
While another is miserly despite wealth's endowment.
ياO عيدُEid عُدْتَyou have returned ولمand have not تزلْceased to be أحلامُناour dreams
مَرْضىsick وميراثُand the legacy السَّلامِof peace ذبيحُslaughtered
O Eid, you have returned, and our dreams are still
O Eid, you've returned but our dreams remain
Sick, and the legacy of peace lies slaughtered.
Sick, and peace's legacy sacrificed.
لَمْdid not يبقَremain فيin أحداقناour pupils عنfrom أمْسناour yesterday
Nothing of our yesterday remains in our pupils
Of our yesterdays naught remains in our eyes
But pus or blood that has been shed.
Save pus or spilled blood.
