ياO عيدُEid مذsince جِئْتَyou came لاno صحوٌclear sky ولاand no مطرُrain
فالأرضُso the earth عابسةٌfrowning والأفْقُand the horizon مُعْتكِرُmurky
O Eid, since you came, there has been neither clear sky nor rain.
O festival, since you came, no vigour nor rain,
So the earth frowns, and the horizon is murky.
The land is gloomy and the horizon is overcast,
وفيand in حناجرناour throats ماتتdied لناfor us قصصٌstories
وأحرفٌand letters مسَّهاtouched them التخريفُsenile rambling والكِبَرُand old age
And in our throats, stories of ours have died,
In our throats, stories have died for us
And letters touched by dotage and old age.
And letters touched by frivolity and arrogance,
ياO عيدُEid كمhow many فيamong الورىhumankind لاهٍa heedless person ومُعْتكِفٍand one devoted
علىto الضلالerror فلاso not يدريhe knows بماof what يزرُhe bears in sin
O Eid, how many among humankind are heedless, and how many devoted
O festival, how many in the world are lost and secluded
To error, unaware of the sins they bear!
To misguidance, unaware of the damage it causes,
وكيفand how تُفْتَحُbe opened للأفراحِto joys أفئدةٌhearts
موتىdead ووحدتناand our unity بالخلفِthrough discord تحتضرُis dying
And how can hearts be opened to joys
And how can hearts deadened
When they are dead, and our unity is dying of discord?
To joy be opened, when our loneliness is dying?
