تعْلمْknow مكانكyour place بينamong ساداتlords الأممthe nations؟
تعْلمْ مكانك بين سادات الأمم؟
Do you dream of arriving, though you have not
I dream of reaching heights, though you still don't know
come to know your place among the lords of nations?
Your place among the greatest of all nations.
مضتhave passed السنونthe years وأنتَwhile you تسفحُspill للأسىout of sorrow
مضت السنون وأنتَ تسفحُ للأسى
ماءwater الحياةof life وماand do not تكُفُّcease عنfrom النَّدَمْregret
ماء الحياة وما تكُفُّ عن النَّدَمْ
The years have passed while, in sorrow, you spill
Years have passed as you let sorrow's waters flow -
the water of life, and never cease regretting.
Ceaseless regret that no repentance sates.
حطِّمْshatter سيوفَكَyour swords قدalready تقادَمَhas grown old عهدُهاtheir era
حطِّمْ سيوفَكَ قد تقادَمَ عهدُها
واستغنand dispense عنwith خُطَبِspeeches الصحائفof the pages والقلمْand the pen
واستغن عن خُطَبِ الصحائف والقلمْ
Shatter your swords—their day is long past;
Shatter your swords - their epoch's gone for sure.
and dispense with the rhetoric of the pages and the pen.
No need for scrolls and speeches to assess.
قلتُI said اطمئنيbe reassured إننيindeed I am منfrom أمَّةٍa nation
قلتُ اطمئني إنني من أمَّةٍ
ترْعىnurtures البطولةheroism والمكارمَand noble deeds والشِّيمْand noble character
ترْعى البطولة والمكارمَ والشِّيمْ
I said, "Rest assured: I am of a nation
Take heart, I'm of a folk that will endure,
that nurtures heroism, noble deeds, and noble character."
Nurturing valor, honor and noblesse.
