تَخَيَّركِchose you الفؤادُthe heart منfrom among الحسانthe beautiful women
تَخَيَّركِ الفؤادُ من الحسان
وليداًas a newborn لَمdid not يذُقْtaste لَبَنَthe milk of الحَنانِtenderness
وليداً لَم يذُقْ لَبَنَ الحَنانِ
The heart chose you from among the beauties,
A newborn that had never tasted the milk of tenderness.
رماهُcast it الحبُّlove بينَbetween صَدىًthirst وصَدٍّand rejection
رماهُ الحبُّ بينَ صَدىً وصَدٍّ
تُجَرِّعُهُforce it to swallow الدقائقُthe minutes والثوانيand the seconds
تُجَرِّعُهُ الدقائقُ والثواني
Love cast it between thirst and rejection,
Which the minutes and seconds force it to swallow.
علىon شفتيهِits two lips أحرفُهُits letters اليَتامىorphaned
على شفتيهِ أحرفُهُ اليَتامى
مُقَرَّحةُulcerated المخارجِthe points of articulation والمعانيand the meanings
مُقَرَّحةُ المخارجِ والمعاني
On its lips, its orphaned letters
Are ulcerated in utterance and meaning.
فإنْso if أنْصَفتِهِyou treat it fairly مماregarding what يعانيit suffers
فإنْ أنْصَفتِهِ مما يعاني
وهَبْتِyou will bestow شَغَافَهُits inmost core سِحْرَthe magic of البيانِeloquence
وهَبْتِ شَغَافَهُ سِحْرَ البيانِ
So if you treat it fairly in its suffering,
You will grant its inmost core the magic of eloquence.
