ياO أمَّmother آكلةُdevourer of الأكبادlivers فيin شغفٍintense passion
كُفِّيrestrain يَديْهاher two hands فمَاfor ... not أبْقَتْshe has left لناfor us كَبِداa liver
O nation, devourer of livers in ravenous passion,
O mother, the liver-eater is filled with passion;
Curb her hands—for you have spared us not a single liver.
Restrain her hands, for she has left us no liver.
لولاكِwere it not for you ماnot حمَلَتْshe carried سيفاًa sword تصولُshe attacks بهwith it
وماand ... not بَنَتْshe built منfrom أمانيناour hopes لهاfor herself عُمَداpillars
Were it not for you, she would never have borne a sword with which to charge,
Without you, she would not have carried a sword to attack with,
Nor built herself pillars out of our hopes.
Nor built herself pillars from our hopes.
طوَّافةًever roaming فيthrough شِعابِthe ravines of الأرضِthe earth عابثةًacting wantonly
ولاnor تُعيرُshe lends أباًa father رُحْمىcompassion لهاof hers ولاnor ولَداa son
Roaming the ravines of the earth, wreaking havoc,
Ever roaming through the earth's ravines, acting wantonly,
She shows neither father nor child a trace of mercy.
Nor does she grant her compassion to father or son.
تجُرُّshe drags ذيْلَthe train of بناتِthe daughters of اللَّيْلnight فيin صَلَفٍarrogance
وماand ... not رأيتُI have seen لهاof hers فيin الصَّالحاتِgood deeds يداa hand
She trails the train of Night’s daughters in haughty pride,
She arrogantly drags the train of the daughters of night,
And never have I seen any hand of hers among righteous deeds.
And I have seen no hand of hers in good deeds.
