قالتْshe said أخاكَyour brother أخاكَyour brother قلتُI said لهاto her أخيmy brother
ماno longer عدتُam I مُصْرِخَهُhis rescuer وليسnor is he بمصرخيmy rescuer
She said, “Your brother! Your brother!” I said to her, “My brother—
I am no longer his rescuer, nor is he mine.
إنif جئتُهI come to him يَزْوَرُّhe turns away ثانيtwisting عطفهِhis neck
وهوyet he is الحفيattentive بمنtoward those whom أعاديI am hostile to والسَّخيand generous
If I come to him, he turns away, twisting his neck aside.
Yet he is attentive and generous toward those I hold as enemies.
ويضنُّand he is miserly فيin صَلَفٍarrogance عليَّtoward me بمالِهِwith his wealth
ويُريقُهand he pours it out فيinto راحةِthe palm المتفسِّخِof the dissolute man
And he arrogantly withholds his wealth from me,
and pours it into the palm of the dissolute man.

This is an age whose days have gone bankrupt;
so say what you wish about them, and put it in writing.”
