قالتshe said أرىI see دمعةًa tear فيin عَيْنِكَyour eye اشتعلتْit blazed
فقلتُso I said بلrather جَمْرَةٌan ember منfrom قَلْبيmy heart ارتحلتْit departed
She said, “I see a tear in your eye that has caught fire.”
She said, "I see a tear blazing in your eye."
I said, “No—an ember that journeyed from my heart.”
So I said, "Rather, an ember has departed from my heart."
دفَنْتُهاI buried it زَمَناًfor a time كيلاso as not to أبوحَI speak openly بماof what
لقيتُI endured منfrom فتنِtrials الدنياthe world وقَدْand already هَزُلَتْit grew gaunt
For a time I buried it, lest I reveal what
I buried it for a time, so as not to speak openly of what
I suffered from the trials of the world, as it dwindled away.
I had suffered from the world's trials—and it had grown gaunt.
تَوَسَّدَتْit took as a pillow أضلُعيmy ribs واسْتَمْرأتْand it relished كَبديmy liver
وماand not ارْعَوَتْit desisted منfrom خطاياهاits sins وماand not وَجِلتْit feared
It made a pillow of my ribs and savored my liver,
It made a pillow of my ribs and relished my liver,
Never desisting from its offenses, never trembling in fear.
And it did not desist from its sins, nor was it afraid.
ياoh ليتنيif only I قَبْلَbefore أنْthat أشْقىI suffer بصُحْبَتِهاin its company
قَضَيْتُI fulfilled نَحْبيmy allotted span ولَمْand did not أحْفِلْI care بماabout what عَمِلَتْit did
Would that, before I suffered through its companionship,
Oh, if only, before I suffered in its company,
I had met my death, heedless of all it wrought.
I had met my death and paid no heed to what it did.
