منfrom أينَwhere أقطفُI pluck أحرفيmy letters؟
إنْif جئتI came أكتبُI write عَنْكِabout you قِصَّهْa story
From where shall I pluck my letters,
From where shall I pluck my letters?
if I set out to write a story about you?
If I come to write about you a tale
منfrom أينwhere استسقيI seek a drink الهوىlove
والنبعانِand the two springs شجاًsorrow وغُصَّةْand a lump in the throat؟
From where shall I seek a draught of love,
From where shall I draw passion
when the two springs are sorrow and a lump in the throat?
While the springs are rugged and distressed?
وأخافُand I fear أنthat تذْويwither القُوىstrength
إنif لمْnot تجُدْgive generously بالوصْلِwith union فُرصَهْan opportunity
And I fear that strength will wither
And I fear my strength will melt away
if no opportunity grants union.
If union finds no chance

Oh, the fisherman's disappointment if
O disappointment of the fowler if
he loses the nets and sells his fishhook!
He loses his net and sells his arrows
