    She said, “Awake, you who are bewitched by kisses!

    Many a kiss has made you swallow poison in honey.

    A year has passed, staining both palms with our blood,

    and ravaging our unity with weakness and guile.

    نغفو على خجلٍ نصحو على وجَلِ

    And we are heedless of what is being plotted against us;

    we slumber in shame, awaken in dread.”

    So I said, “That is an ailment: we have no escape

    from its grip—how, then, can there be healing, O my hope?”
