فأجبتُso I answered ذاتthe woman with العقْدِthe necklace والخَلْخالِand the anklet
فأجبتُ ذات العقْدِ والخَلْخالِ
ماليwhy do I أراكِI see you غَدَوْتِyou have become منamong عُذَّاليmy reproachers
مالي أراكِ غَدَوْتِ من عُذَّالي
So I answered the woman with the necklace and anklet:
I answered her of braids and anklets
Why do I see that you have become one of my reproachers?
Why do I see you turned against me?
لمْdid not يبْقِleave ليfor me شغفاًpassion لأحلامfor the dreams of الصِّباyouth
لمْ يبْقِ لي شغفاً لأحلام الصِّبا
هذاthis المشيبُgray hair بمَفْرقيat my hair's parting وقَذاليand the back of my head
هذا المشيبُ بمَفْرقي وقَذالي
It has left me no passion for the dreams of youth—
My passion for dreams of youth is no more
this gray hair at my parting and the back of my head.
This greying hair on my temples betrays me
فعلامَso why إنْif ألْقَيْتُI cast خلفيbehind me نظرةًa glance
فعلامَ إنْ ألْقَيْتُ خلفي نظرةً
متحسراًregretfully تُلْقينَyou ask ألفَa thousand سُؤالquestion؟
متحسراً تُلْقينَ ألفَ سُؤال؟
So why, if I cast a glance behind me
Why, if I glance back with longing
in regret, do you ask a thousand questions?
Do you ask a thousand questions in sorrow?
إنَّindeed التيshe whom أهْوىI love تُلَوِّنُcolors حاضريmy present
إنَّ التي أهْوى تُلَوِّنُ حاضري
حُباًwith love وتَعْقِدُand binds فيin يَديmy hand آماليmy hopes
حُباً وتَعْقِدُ في يَدي آمالي
Indeed, she whom I love colors my present
She I love colours my present
with love, and binds my hopes in my hand.
With love and places my hopes in my hands
